Mission Statement

As San Diego County's only local nonprofit, independent healthcare foundation, Alliance Healthcare Foundation (AHF) provides a public voice for the critical healthcare needs of our communities. Community Health is one of our three funding areas; the others are Access to Healthcare and Mental Health.

Maintaining and improving the health of an entire community draws on the combined efforts of diverse local groups and individuals. AHF's Community Health funding priority area deals with:

  • prevention and control of communicable diseases;
  • substance abuse prevention and harm reduction; and
  • violence prevention.

Community Health grants to local organizations support a wide range of activities. Priority is given to program and financing strategies that can produce discernable outcomes. Recent grants have funded:

  • capacity-building for a coalition of HIV/AIDS service providers providing education and health services to African Americans
  • an evaluation of a substance abuse prevention and recovery program, and general operating costs
  • a clean syringe exchange program, a component of AHF's Harm Reduction Initiative
  • operating costs for a case manager, to provide services to victims of domestic violence
  • the salary of a half-time program coordinator, to provide mental health services to immigrant and refugee women who are victims of domestic violence
