President & CEO
Karma Bass is President & CEO of Alliance Healthcare Foundation.
Focused on making connections and leveraging resources, she brings
to this role enthusiastic and passionate support of community health
and wellness, particularly for San Diego’s medically underserved.
Prior to joining Alliance Healthcare Foundation, Ms. Bass was Senior
Research Executive at The Governance Institute, a San Diego firm
focused on educating and training hospital boards of directors across
the country. In her 10 years at The Governance Institute, she consulted
with CEOs and board leaders to identify best practices in the field
and translate them into educational tools that could be adopted
across the healthcare industry. Ms. Bass has written, lectured,
and consulted on policy and governance matters to national audiences
of healthcare CEOs and board leaders.
Prior to The Governance Institute, Ms. Bass was director of Program
Development at the Hospital Association of San Diego & Imperial
Counties for three years, where she led the Community Health Improvement
Partners collaborative.
Ms. Bass is board-certified in healthcare management and holds
a master’s degree in public health with a focus in health
services administration from San Diego State University. She received
her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San
Diego.
Program Officer
Hamse manages grants for Alliance, provides technical assistance to grantees and prospective grantees and represents the Alliance on committees and at public meetings.
Prior to joining the AHF, Hamse spent eight years in a leadership role through his work as the Associate Executive Director for Horn of Africa, a well respected and effective refugee assistance organization, whose mission is to provide culturally and linguistically relevant services to East African refugees and immigrants. Currently, Hamse is the chairperson for the San Diego Refugee Forum, a professional association of organizations and advocates serving all populations fleeing violence and persecution and seeking refuge in San Diego.
Hamse was born in Somalia and moved with his family to the United States in 1994 after escaping from a civil war in his native country and spending almost three years in a refugee camp in Kenya. He attended Crawford High School in San Diego, and then graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in political science. He went on to receive a Master of Science in Organizational Management and Leadership from Springfield College. In 2008, Hamse completed an advanced graduate-level certificate program on the Foundations of Conflict Analysis from the United States Institute of Peace.
Grants and Special Projects Coordinator
Erica is AHF's Grants and Special Projects Coordinator. Following fifteen years in for-profit, she was happy to make the transition to nonprofit when she joined Alliance in December 2008. Erica manages AHF's grants database and special projects on behalf of the foundation.
